Former President Donald Trump made controversial remarks on Saturday, suggesting that he would support Russia taking action against NATO member countries that fail to meet defense spending guidelines. Speaking at a rally in Conway, South Carolina, Trump recounted how he prioritized ensuring that all NATO members paid their fair share for defense during his presidency.
He stated that if a country did not meet its financial obligations and was invaded by Russia, he would not intervene and would even encourage Russia to act as it pleased.
This stance contradicts the collective defense principle at the core of NATO.
The White House swiftly condemned Trump’s comments, calling them “appalling and unhinged.” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized President Joe Biden’s commitment to strengthening alliances and maintaining global stability.
Trump’s stance on NATO funding has been contentious throughout his presidency. While he has criticized other NATO members for not meeting the 2% GDP defense spending target, he has also inaccurately portrayed the funding process, suggesting that countries are failing to pay their dues to NATO.
Reports have indicated that Trump had privately threatened to withdraw the United States from NATO, aligning himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s desire to weaken the alliance.
Trump’s consistent praise for Putin and his dismissal of U.S. intelligence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election have further fueled speculation about his ties to Russia.
