Beloved actor Michael J. Fox, renowned for his unforgettable role in “Back To The Future,” is grappling with a profound loss. His steadfast companion, Gus, a twelve-year-old Great Dane-Labrador mix, has recently passed away. Gus stood faithfully by Fox’s side throughout the highs and lows of the past twelve years, and now the actor must navigate the world without his cherished friend.
In a poignant message to his one million social media followers, Fox shared a heartfelt image of Gus and penned, “Gus — an extraordinary dog and steadfast friend, you will be deeply missed.” Accompanying the image, Fox referenced pages 220-222 of his memoir, “No Time Like The Future: an Optimist Considers Mortality,” published in 2020. Within the pages of his book, Fox eloquently portrays Gus as his “wonder dog,” a devoted companion who brought joy to all who knew him.
Gus played a pivotal role in Fox’s life, especially during his battle with Parkinson’s disease, a struggle that has been widely known for over two decades. In his memoir, Fox underscores the invaluable presence Gus brought to his life and the void his absence leaves in the family.
Reflecting on their bond, Fox wrote, “I didn’t rescue Gus. One could argue that he rescued me, but he’d be too humble to claim such credit.” The actor acknowledges that Gus’s unwavering affection helped alleviate his sense of solitude during his health challenges.
According to Fox, having a canine companion provided a comforting sense of connection. “You know that regardless of your circumstances, regardless of how you feel, this creature is by your side and connected to you. And you feel it. It’s a multiplier of strength,” Fox shared. He believes that coping with a chronic illness can lead to isolation, but a dog has the ability to expand one’s world and offer invaluable companionship.
Gus even played a part in Fox’s physical recovery. Following surgery in 2018 to remove a tumor from his spinal cord, Fox relied on a wheelchair. It was Gus who aided him in regaining his mobility. Fox fondly recalls, “He would circle the wheelchair with a low woof woof, woof woof, and then sit directly in front of me. And he would look at me, and I would say, ‘Everything will be okay.’”
Losing a beloved pet is never easy, and for Michael J. Fox, it’s no exception. Let us take a moment to extend our condolences to him and recognize the remarkable bond he shared with Gus. The absence of a faithful companion leaves a profound void, but the memories and love will endure in Fox’s heart indefinitely.
